NEW YORK.- a decade ago, Meghan Trainor was a hit songwriter, who would soon become a successful pop performer own right. Your song All About That Bass established the then-20-year-old as a new force channeling old sounds, a blend of doo-wop with contemporary pop hooks in an era dominated by big synths. Trainor had something to say, his personality intertwined with lyrics about body acceptance.
“I have my self-love pop hits that I make in my sleep,” he told The Associated Press. “That’s the therapy I need for myself. But it also helps people, so it’s a win-win as a songwriter.”
On Friday, Trainor will release his sixth album study, Timeless. Empowering messages remain at the heart of her sound, but now, she’s matured them to meet where she is in life: as madre, sister and veteran of this business.
The first single, Been Like Thiswith its hero T-Pain, even references All About That Bass. She sings, “Ooh-wee, she got that booty / That kind of boom-boom, that bass that I like.”
Make it the first single? She considers it ‘destiny’, and is quick to mention that her two brothers also participated in the song’s composition. “My mom was sobbing. My dad was crying, I’m pretty sure he didn’t know who T-Pain was until I talked about him non-stop,” she says.
Music and family
The family is at the center of Timeless and the music that Trainor makes. Mother of two children, whom he takes into account in everything he does.
“To The Moon It’s for my son, because he loves rocket ships and outer space,” Bruce Trainor, 3, says of Barry. “A lot of it is inspired by my kids. “I want them to have songs that help teach them self-love as they grow up, you know, self-confidence and being kind to themselves.”
And it’s also for the listener, of course. I Wanna Thank Me shows Niecy Nash-Betts’ acceptance speech at the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she said: “And you know who I want to thank? Me, for believing in me and doing what they said I couldn’t do. I want to say to myself , in front of all of you beautiful people: Come on girl, with your bad self You did it.
“I kept writing songs about self-esteem, and this was one of the last songs I wrote for the album,” he said. After a while, I didn’t know what else to write about. And then his manager sent him Nash’s speech, it was an instant inspiration. The day after they composed it, Trainor sent it to Nash, who filmed herself listening to it while she sobbed.
“I had Niecy and his daughter and his wife come and sing on the album, sing in the background on the song,” he adds. “So when you hear all these great voices at the end, with a bunch of women singing, that’s us.”
Rollin’, With its big strings, brass and bass, it also has something of a feminist message, which Trainor says was inspired by experiences she’s had in the music industry, such as seeing her manager being mistaken for an assistant because she’s a woman. . “Any woman in the industry, everywhere, would be upset,” he says.
To protect her peace, she says, simply: “I’m on antidepressants, I got upset with baby number two, I was losing sleep,” she says. “So I took my medicine and saw my therapist. I try to see her every Wednesday and I try to vocalize a lot when I’m feeling overwhelmed.”
That relates to the album. Timeless, The title, is derived from her: “great, great, great, great fear of death”, as she says.
“When you have kids, you think, ‘Oh, this is the meaning of life. I have to be here forever,'” she says. “Instead of living with this fear that I have every morning and day and night, I want to live. Like, ‘Wow! We’re so lucky, we’re here. We have all this time together.’ And so I’m trying to understand the word ‘timeless’.”
Next steps
Later this year, Trainor will be on tour for the first time in seven years, also her first time since becoming a mother. “I’m in the gym like an Olympic athlete,” she jokes. “I’m going to get in shape and then start practicing.” Dancing and singing at the same time is not an easy task, and “I want to dance a lot,” she says.
Beyond that, his goals are to put on a great show and keep his family involved every step of the way. “I’m going to try to make it fun, so that in every state we can do something fun with the kids,” she says. “It’s going to be wonderful. I’ve prepared it so it’s impossible for us not to have fun.”
And maybe create some timeless memories.
