Mexico proposes to the US to deport migrants to their countries without passing through its territory

MEXICO CITY- The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, expressed this Wednesday his intention to reach an agreement with the United States administration so that migrants deported from United States territory are sent directly to their countries of origin, without passing through Mexico.

“We are waiting to reach an agreement so that, if they make the decision to deport, they do it directly. We are helping to reach that agreement,” said the Mexican president during his usual morning press conference, reported the newspaper La Jornada.

López Obrador pointed out that Mexico “has no problem welcoming all migrants,” but expressed his doubts about the need to carry out these deportations in a triangular manner from the United States through Mexico.

These statements by López Obrador occurred just one day after the president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced a series of new measures to prevent migrants who cross its southern border illegally from receiving asylum, thus facilitating the expulsions of those who are not legally protected to stay in US territory.

“Humanitarian exceptions”

The measures will not be permanent and will be suspended when the number of migrants crossing the border is low enough for the US system to handle it safely and effectively. In addition, humanitarian exceptions are included, such as unaccompanied minors, victims of trafficking or sick people.

Biden and López Obrador already had a telephone conversation the day before in which they addressed several issues from the recent elections in Mexico to the solid and constructive partnership between both nations to improve cooperation in economic, immigration and security matters.

Now, López Obrador explained that during the conversation they talked about Guatemala, a hot spot for regional migration, as well as support for Central America, the Caribbean and Latin America to address the causes of migration.
