Migrants sleep on buses and streets in a New York without available beds

NY.- Several groups of migrants recently arrived in New York spent Saturday night outdoors and on buses parked in front of a Manhattan hotel that is being used to house them and that authorities say has run out of space.

According to local media, small buses with a capacity for about 15 people began to arrive this weekend at the Roosevelt Hotel in order to offer migrants -mainly single men- a space to cool off during the heat wave in the city.

In the end, the vehicles were used for many people to spend the night in them, while others did so in the middle of the street waiting to receive accommodation, either in the hotel or in other places enabled for it to which they are redirected. from there.

“We continue to prioritize children and families and find a bed for them every night,” a spokesperson for the Mayor’s Office told the NY1 channel, stressing that the city currently does not have enough capacity to accommodate the hundreds of migrants who continue to arrive. every day.

The flow of immigrants – mostly asylum seekers from Latin America – has brought almost 100,000 people to New York since last year, of which more than 50,000 are under the care of the city, which in addition to shelter provides them with food, registration of their children in school and health services, among other help.

This month, Mayor Eric Adams already announced that he was forced to end the policy of providing indefinite housing for any migrant and gave a period of 60 days for those who have been in shelters for a long time to abandon them and look for another place, using ‘friends or relatives’ if necessary, in order to ensure that families with children have room.
