Monterrey, NL. In the Future Mobility Fairwhich will be held in Monterrey next June, will address mobility from the concept of a technological change that will go from the internal combustion engine to the electric vehicle and on smart cities that are based on a city with mobility for people based on the pyramid, and the relevance that the formation of human capital will have, affirmed Clelia Hernández, director of the Nuevo León 4.0 initiative.

“The pyramid (of Urban mobility) should be: first pedestrians, then cyclists, urban transport and freight, then shared vehicles and at the bottom electric and autonomous vehicles. But we are backwards in the cities,” said Clelia Hernández, during a press conference with several academics from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey campus.

On the other hand, he explained that at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, professors have an enormous responsibility to know the electromobility design of the future, in Germany, where the expansion of renewable energies and the efficient use of resources are essential for the protection of the environment.

“In that sense, the Tecnológico de Monterrey, in the area of engineering, is always one step ahead, because it has to be that way, there is this great challenge that we are putting on the table. Talking about mobility has to do with the future, when you see electric cars or autonomous in the streets, Monterrey has its own challenge, where the design of cities for people must not be lost sight of,” the official emphasized.

Just as the German government pursues the objective of being the leading market in electromobility, and has raised the possibility that by 2030 between seven and 10 million electric vehicles may circulate, the government of Nuevo León seeks to create the hub of electromobility strongest in Latin America.

“In other more developed economies we see that they are paying attention so that the streets circulate the electric vehicles and pedestrians and cyclists can also transit, where there are enough charging stations so that everyone can move around”, emphasized Clelia Hernández.

For his part, Ricardo Swain Oropeza, Regional Dean of the North, at Tec de Monterrey, stressed that electromobility must be reconsidered to know how engineers are going to move from now on, “because if all we do is change the internal combustion vehicles for electric, it is not the solution, you are going to reduce the environmental impact but the sustainability problem is going to continue there”.

“In Germany we realized that it is well regulated, you cannot take your bike, or a scooter, if you carry two people you will be fined, there is a culture that we need to work on. In addition, mobility must be promoted by companies, I know of cities here in Mexico that encourage their employees to arrive by bicycle, and create alliances with the state government, here we have to prepare ourselves”, stressed Swain Oropeza.

talent training

On the other hand, he commented that between 3,000 and 4,000 mechatronics engineers graduate from Tec de Monterrey, representing 3% of the country’s university population. This Mechatronics degree is developed in conjunction with a German University, which helps them to link up with the rest of the sector in that country, “I can say that it served as inspiration for the Tec 21 model.”

30 teachers are being trained, who participated in Germany in two initiatives: industry 4.0as reconversion and the other in electromobility. He assured that it is no longer possible to return to combustion engines in the academy, but that the teachers must retrain.

“We cannot continue teaching combustion models, students have to adapt to today’s needs, so in the conversion of educational topics (…) we need to move very quickly, because the industry is not going to wait for us. So the nearshoring issue is very important, because we are involved in updating, if our educational system is in the 80s, we are going to lose the opportunity”, warned the North Regional Dean.
