Visiting Brussels, Volodymyr Zelensky claimed to have “intercepted a plan for the destruction of Moldova, a plan which was in the hands of the Russian intelligence services”.

Moldovan intelligence services said Thursday they had detected “destabilizing” activities, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had intercepted a Russian plan concerning this former Soviet republic.

“Based on information presented by our Ukrainian partner and internal data, we confirm that we have identified activities aimed at weakening and destabilizing Moldova,” the SIS services wrote in a statement.

“We cannot give more details at this stage for the risk of compromising” the measures in progress to “elucidate” what happened, they add.

“Our institutions work to guarantee the security of the country and use all the information from our partners in order to anticipate and prevent such attempts”, reacted for her part the pro-European president Maia Sandu.

A plan to “deal a fatal blow to Moldovan democracy”

Visiting Brussels, the Ukrainian head of state said he “intercepted a plan for the destruction of Moldova, a plan which was in the hands of the Russian intelligence services”.

“This plan showed who, when and how to deal a fatal blow to Moldovan democracy”, detailed Volodymyr Zelensky. “So I don’t know if, indeed, Moscow gave the order that he be executed but in any case (…) this plan was very similar to the one they tried to implement against Ukraine “.

Moldova, a small country of 2.6 million inhabitants neighboring Ukraine and candidate since the end of June to join the EU, is threatened militarily by Russia with the presence of Russian soldiers on its territory, in the breakaway pro-Russian region of Transdniestria.

Maia Sandu recently accused Russia of being behind the trafficking of arms, goods, human trafficking or financing anti-government protests.
