The current wave of layoffs at tech companies also affects Google and Google’s parent company Alphabet.

After Microsoft announced that it would cut 10,000 jobs, Google is now laying off 12,000 employees.

Looking to the future

Those affected and other employees were informed by email from Google and Alphabet boss Sundar Pichai in the morning, and one was also published blog entry.

“A difficult decision to prepare for the future,” is the title of the blog entry. Economic fluctuations are responsible for the layoffs.

More on the subject:

Due to the “dramatic growth” in the past two years, many people have been hired, but this no longer reflects today’s “economic reality”.

Specific details on how many jobs will be lost in individual areas were not given. However, it affects different product areas, functions, levels and regions.

In total, the 12,000 positions correspond to around six percent of the total workforce.

Aside from Google/Alphabet and Microsoft, companies such as Amazon, Meta and Unity have also laid off employees in recent weeks. Great news to start the new year.
