Nearly 500 thousand Cubans have fled the island since 2022

SPAIN.- The Human Rights Organization of the Americas (WOLA) pointed out that since March 2022, nearly half a million Cubans have left the island due to the strong economic and social crisis that is being experienced in Cuba, as a result of the intensification of the dictatorship of Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The analysis highlights that during fiscal years 2022 and 2023, approximately 425,000 Cuban migrants arrived in the United States, and another 36,000 filed asylum applications in Mexico between January 2022 and November 2023, representing more than 4% of the national population.

WOLA also details that the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) registered a maximum of 44,079 encounters in December 2022, breaking the record of the historical levels of the Mariel exoduses in 1980 and the crisis of the rafters of 1994 combined.

The document mentions the restrictions that have increased for Cubans in the countries that serve as a route to reach USA. Which translates into greater illegal migration and clandestine passages that put the lives of migrants at risk.

WOLA points out that the current crisis in Cuba is attributed in part to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which revealed the Island’s persistent structural problems, accentuated by the dictatorship of Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The Cuban regime unveiled a new package of economic measures that seeks to address the growing financial difficulties facing the Island. The Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz presented, during the plenary session of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP), a series of tariff adjustments and reforms in key areas to “invigorate the national economy.”
