Storms bring strong winds and threat of tornadoes to southern US

MIAMI.- Tallahassee has not yet recovered from the damage left by the strong storms of last week, when meteorologists predict severe weather that could bring new complications in the capital of Florida between this Monday and Tuesday.

Thunderstorms and three tornadoes devastated the northern Florida city, leaving a trail of destruction in homes, a woman dead and more than a third of the residents of León County without electricity as of Sunday.

“A flood alert has been issued for much of the region from Monday morning until Tuesday evening. There is a potential for widespread rainfall of 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts,” the National Weather Service in Tallahassee announced in a report posted on X (Twitter).

The warning flags the risk of the region being hit by “multiple episodes of severe weather” over the next two days. “This could lead to localized flooding. Be sure to clear storm drains of any debris,” the forecast continued.

Meteorological measurement models also show a probability that includes “high rainfall” as the “worst case scenario.”

Storm recovery plans

The announcement of the new climate threat comes as recovery efforts continue in Tallahassee, focused on restoring power to those affected and cleaning up the area devastated by bad weather.

On Saturday night, the City reported that the power supply had been restored to 75% of more than 126,000 customers, and on Sunday it was announced that 90% of the service had been reconnected.

Residents in the worst-affected areas, where power lines, poles and transformers were destroyed, could see their electricity supplies restored as soon as Monday.

Starting this Monday, May 13, sandbags will be available to the public in different locations in the city of Tallahassee and León County to deal with possible new storms.

Leon County schools were mostly reopened, but buses were not running and start times were delayed. Two schools remained closed.
