Mulheim.
The police and fire brigade had hundreds of New Year’s Eve operations in Mülheim. None were dramatic. But an ambulance crew was spat on.

Party-goers could let it rip again without corona restrictions – the police and fire brigade in Mülheim had already expected a wild New Year’s Eve and had reinforced with numerous emergency services. In the end it was actually stressful, but according to the police and fire brigade there were no serious incidents.

The Mülheim fire brigade was called to a large number of operations until the early New Year’s morning. Fortunately, no major fires broke out on New Year’s Eve. In total, the emergency services were alerted 140 times – they had to go out on fire missions 31 times (there were only six such operations in the previous year), and the emergency services were called 107 times.

Mülheim fire brigade had to extinguish 25 smaller fires

According to the Mülheim fire department’s New Year’s balance sheet, 25 small fires had to be extinguished, such as burning garbage cans, paper containers, small areas or fires on vehicles. A reported building fire on Oberhausener Strasse with house-high flames on the back of the building turned out to be less dramatic: a fir tree was burning in the backyard. When the emergency services arrived, all they had to do was extinguish the fire.

Furthermore, the fire brigade had to provide two minor technical assistance and move out due to a triggered home smoke detector and a fire alarm system.

Falls, burns, too much alcohol: rescue services went out 57 times

The rescue service had about as much to do over New Year’s Eve as on an “average” day, the fire brigade sums up. Ambulances were deployed to a total of 57 locations in Mülheim due to excessive alcohol consumption, falls, minor burns or injuries caused by glass. An ambulance had to be called 10 times. There were 50 patient transports.

An ambulance crew from the Johanniter had a particularly unpleasant experience: their car was called to a physical injury at the Styrum train station, and the supposed patient spat on the emergency services on site. The police were called and took the man into custody. An ambulance was no longer needed. The perpetrator is now awaiting a report.

Police were called to disturbances and fights

The turn of the year was also work-intensive for the police officers, it was said on New Year’s morning. In the period between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. alone, the police in Essen and Mülheim had to be deployed 237 times – almost 60 operations per hour had to be managed. Pyrotechnics were also ignited in Mülheim, disturbances of the peace and fights were reported. While there was a real riot in some places in Essen, firefighters were specifically attacked and firecrackers were thrown at them, there were “no outstanding incidents” in Mülheim, as a police spokesman reported on Sunday morning when asked.
