In the English Premier League, Newcastle and Tottenham are fighting for Champions League tickets. The match between the teams was not a nail-biter: Newcastle led 5-0 after 21 minutes and eventually won 6-1.

Tottenham have had a difficult season and went to Newcastle with a 2-3 home loss against Bournemouth in the bag.

The match against Newcastle was over before it really got going. Newcastle took a 3–0 lead after 9 minutes and led 5–0 after 21 minutes. Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak accounted for two goals each, while Joelinton netted once.

At half-time, Tottenham changed goalkeepers as Fraser Forster replaced the injured French national team goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

– It’s incredibly embarrassing, we were behind on all levels. We should apologize to the fans, Lloris told Sky Sports after the match, reports the BBC.

– Right now it is difficult to evaluate the performance, but the pride was missing.

In the second half, the teams scored a goal each and Newcastle thus won 6–1.

According to the BBC, Tottenham last conceded six goals in November 2013. The last five-goal loss is from December 2013. Newcastle last won by at least five goals in January 2011.

Champions League close

Newcastle last played in the Champions League group stage in the 2002–03 season. With the help of fresh Saudi money, the club is now on its way back to football’s glory.

Manager Eddie Howe has coached Newcastle since November 2021.

– During the first half hour, everything was just right, Howe told Sky Sports.

– I can’t enjoy myself until the match is over. We felt the pressure. Now I am satisfied.

Arsenal and Manchester City settle for the gold in the Premier League.

Teams 3–4 are also allowed to play Champions League group games this autumn, but after Sunday’s big loss, there is not much to suggest that Tottenham would be part of the English quartet.

The standings behind the top duo
Lag Matcher Point
3. Newcastle 31 59
4. Man United 30 59
5. Tottenham 32 53
6. Aston Villa 32 51
7. Liverpool 31 50
8. Brighton 29 49

In Sunday’s second match, Bournemouth and West Ham met. If Maxwel Cornet’s late goal had not been narrowly offside, the victory figures would have been equal in that match.

West Ham still had to settle for a 4–0 victory and can probably eventually blow their breath. The team was drawn into the bottom quagmire for a long time, but the balance of 3–1–1 in the last five games means that the distance to the relegation line is now up to six points.
