Take your time machine! This Friday, September 29 at 9:05 p.m., France 5 broadcasts the cartoon Arizona Junior, one of the Coen brothers’ very first films. Nicolas Cage plays one of his most eccentric characters, Hi, a repeat burglar for whom prison no longer holds any secrets. American actor who also starred in Flip/Face stars alongside Holly Hunter, known for her character in The Piano Lesson by Jane Campion, and who plays Ed, a policewoman with whom Hi falls in love. Out of love for her, he decides to settle down and stop his life as a delinquent to start a family… Problem: Ed is sterile.

The Coen Brothers and satire

Second film from the Coen brothers, released three years after their dark thriller Blood for Blood, Arizona Junior radically changes tone. In a zany comedy, they paint a portrait of deep America through the characters of Hi and Ed. A taste for the absurd and black humor which will become over the years the true trademark of their cinema, and which will make Joel and Ethan the enfant terribles of Hollywood.

The start of a long collaboration

Arizona Junior also marks the beginning of a long collaboration between Joel and Ethan Coen and John Goodman (troubling in 10 Cloverfield Lane) which we will find in five other of their films like O’Brother or Inside Llewyn Davis. But movie fans especially remember his character Walter Sobchak in the cult The Big Lebowski of which the actor has memorable memories: “It was an incredible moment in my career, very special. We laughed a lot on this set. It was a unique experience. I’m delighted that people loved this film so much and that it was recognized by critics ” he confided has AlloCiné. He thus joins the three-time Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand (the anti-star with three Oscars in American cinema), George Clooney and Steve Buscemi in the gang of favorite actors of the two filmmaker brothers.
