CITY OF PANAMA.- In response to the growing flow of migrants trying to cross the Darien jungle to the United States, Panama has increased its maritime security measures. Security Minister Frank Ábrego ordered the deployment of patrol boats and border police forces on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

This action follows President José Raúl Mulino’s decision to close several access points on the border with Colombia, A measure that has caused diplomatic tensions with the Colombian governmentMinister Ábrego indicated that any vessel transporting irregular migrants that attempts to enter Panama will be detained, and its occupants will be handed over to the Colombian authorities.

The closure of the crossings in the Darien jungle is intended to channel migrants towards controlled and safe routes. According to the Panamanian government, the migrants will be directed to a “humanitarian crossing” that will take them to a shelter where they will receive assistance from Panamanian officials and international organizations.

Most migrants who use the Darien route are headed toward the United States.

Dangerous migrant corridor

The Darien jungle is a dangerous corridor through which thousands of migrants, mainly Venezuelans, Haitians, Ecuadorians, Colombians and Chinese, try to reach the United States. In 2023, more than half a million people ventured along this route, facing risks such as fast-flowing rivers, wildlife and criminal groups.

To address the migration crisis, Mulino signed an agreement with the United States that includes an investment of six million dollars to finance repatriation flights and other related activities. This collaboration reinforces the presence of a unit specialized in combating human trafficking in Darien, sent by the United States in June.

Migration is a crucial issue in the upcoming US elections, and the measures adopted by Panama reflect growing international collaboration to address the challenge.
