Peruvian prosecutor's office seeks jail time for Keiko Fujimori

LIMA.- The Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office requested preventive detention for Keiko Fujimorileader of the Fuerza Popular party, after he undertook a trip to the United States to participate in various activities, amid accusations of alleged money laundering.

The official statement from the Public Ministry indicates that a judge will evaluate the request on June 12, without providing details about the specific reasons that led to this precautionary measure. Fujimori, 48, faces allegations of having received illicit funds from both construction company Odebrecht and Peruvian donors, allegedly intended to finance his failed presidential campaigns in 2011 and 2016, as well as his defeat in the 2021 elections.

The money laundering trial is scheduled to begin July 1. The Prosecutor’s Office requested a sentence of 30 years in prison for Fujimori, as well as 22 years for his ex-husband Mark Vito Villanella, and additional sentences for 38 other individuals, totaling more than 800 years in prison.

Daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who recently obtained his freedom, Keiko leads the Fuerza Popular party, which has 23 seats in Peru’s unicameral Congress, being the largest bench in a highly fragmented parliament of 130 members.

On his social networks, Fujimori expressed his enthusiasm on Sunday to begin an academic visit to California, highlighting the opportunity to exchange experiences with universities, political institutions and technology companies during his stay in the United States.

On Tuesday, Fujimori shared an image thanking the Dominican University of California for inviting her to speak and dialogue with the community during an event, evidencing her appreciation for the reception and the opportunity for interaction provided.
