What a rare combination of going to a concert and enjoying it to the fullest, but also feeling that a little more was missing. That is to say, Placebo really put on a spectacular show at the Palacio de los Deportes on the night of Monday, April 17 and it was enjoyed to the fullest, there is no doubt about that. But those who expected an avalanche of classics, perhaps they got the surprise.

The gang commanded by Brian Molko y Stefan Olsdal he finally returned to Mexico City, this after he had to postpone his visit last year. And they did it to present here this great album titled Never Let Me Gowith which they broke a streak of almost 10 years without pitches.

Those who saw them the day before in the Lunario del Auditorio already knew where the matter was going. But who doesn’t surely they had the uncertainty about what we would see on stage, the repertoire and all those waves when you go to see a band that hadn’t come for a while. Even with that and with one or another little detail, the Placebo thing at the Palacio de los Deportes was exciting.

Placebo presented the album ‘Never Let Me Go’ at the Palacio de los Deportes

A few minutes before 9:00 PM, a projection was seen on stage accompanied by a voice message He asked attendees not to record with their cell phones. The band takes that part of the connection and the link between artist and public very seriously. “It is a moment that will not be repeated… respect and love” said the Placebo message in the Palacio de los Deportes.

Of course, not all of them obeyed the order, but a good majority did put their phone away (at least on the track in front of the stage). Strange moment, because today one is more used to seeing cell phones recording from the beginning of any show. If it’s right or wrong, that’s up to you, but hey…

The Placebo set at the Palacio de los Deportes started with “Forever Chemicals” y “Beautiful James”, both from the new record, followed by applause that became “Scene of the Crime” and then “Hugz.” Later, Brian Molko addressed the audience and showed how well he is fluent in Spanish.

“See all the people tonight. Thank you, welcome everyone. My name is Brian and my rock band name is Placebo. It is a very special night for us and we want it to be the same for you.“, said the vocalist. It is to be recognized that an artist of that caliber would take the trouble to address the public in the language here. Detailed.

Brian Molko, a special dedication and a bit of the past

Following along the line of the songs of Never Let Me Goit was time to listen live to one of the most emotional songs on the album with “Happy Birthday in the Sky”. A true sample of how Placebo are able to wrap you in an intense nostalgia.

And is not for less… “We are in family, this song is for my brother”, Brian Molko said before playing that song. But the nostalgia did not stop, as Stefan Olsdal immediately warned that we would take a brief trip into the past. This is how “Bionic” arrived, that song from the self-titled debut album from 1996 which was a real surprise.

Some hits from the past and a Placebo technical problem at the Palacio de los Deportes

After playing “Try Better Next Time”, Placebo was preparing to play some great songs from the past. Some are more classic than others if you want, but they are from yesteryear, they are… Of course, there was a slight inconvenience before because they brought a piano to the stage, and a technical problem delayed the show for a few minutes.

Stefan played just a few notes on the piano and stopped. “We have a little problem” Brian said. Random moment, but the duo coped with it by joking a bit, saying they would burn the instrument. And by the way, revealed that the show was being recorded. Let’s see when they make us watch that video, in which they obviously promised not to add the piano blooper.

while we waited for Placebo resumed the show at the Palacio de los Deportes, the people in the stands made the wave. Somebody out there wanted to start the “Cielito Lindo”, but it didn’t happen. And finally, Stefan Olsdal said that they would continue the show without the piano part (which they always added in the final stretch of the concert).

What came was a flurry of old-fashioned rolitas that lifted the spirits after the break. “For What It’s Worth”, “Slave to the Wage”, “Song to Say Goodbye”, “Come Undone”, “The Bitter End” e “Infra Red” they appeared in the repertoire to bring a bit of that dose of the past that many fans expected from Placebo at the Palacio de los Deportes.

Finally, Placebo decided that the song would be put together with the piano, which, now, was already arranged. The song that came was “Too Many Friends”, which raised the cry of the people to make way for the spectacular cover of “Shout” by Tears For Fears that was another very pleasant surprise.

The closing was armed with “Fix Yourself” and to complete the roll of cool covers, “Running Up That Hill” original de Kate Bush. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal bowed to the audience and hugged each other, smiling at the audience to end the concert.

Yes, for some it will have been a strange show because, perhaps, they came with the idea of listening to songs like “This Picture,” “Special Needs” or “Every You Every Me,” classic roles that could seem unmissable.

And yes, it is a risky decision for the band to do without those songs for what has been this tour in general. But placebo is giving the place it deserves for his new album, Never Let Me Goen los setlists.

With everything and that, the Placebo concert at the Palacio de los Deportes was exciting. It was noticeable that the Mexican public missed them, and they reciprocated the affection. That’s why they are a bandot.
