Greek fighter jets escorted a Ryanair plane from Poland to Athens as a precaution on Sunday after a bomb threat was reported on the flight.

After a bomb scare on a flight from Poland to Greece, Greek fighter jets escorted a Ryanair plane as a precaution, a Greek defense ministry source said on Sunday.

The aircraft landed safely shortly before 5 p.m. at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in Athens. It was inspected by deminers, said the official Greek agency ANA. The plane came from Katowice in Poland with more than 190 passengers on board and was bound for Athens.

According to information from the Greek media Kathimeriniinformation about a bomb existed from the moment the plane took off, since an alarm was triggered at NATO headquarters.

Hungarian fighter jets and Greek F-16s were immediately ordered to escort him.

The airliner was met at a secluded location at Athens airport. The origin of the bomb threat has not yet been specified.
