Police intervene after protest in line to buy food and diapers in Havana

A queue to buy food and diapers for babies in Old Havana led to a protest that was appeased by the police, the independent media reported. Cubanet.

The protest happened after the people in the queue, who had been waiting for their turn for hours, were told to leave, that they were not going to sell more, adds the information.

In a short video released by Cubanet in their networksa large crowd of people can be seen at the entrance to the store, which is guarded by two policemen.

Last January, a video circulated on social networks showing a group of Cuban mothers fleeing, many of them with their children in their arms or in strollers, from a line to buy diapers in which the police sprayed pepper spray to disperse the tumult.

Since April 2022, the Cimex company said that it faces an overdemand for disposable diapers and that the shortage denounced by Cuban mothers is not such. The company pointed out that when they release diapers, the product is sold out in less than 72 hours after being on sale in stores in CUP.

The queues to buy diapers in 2022 were reported throughout the country. Since then, numerous criticisms have been made of the provincial governments for not organizing the distribution of this product, but the solutions have not arrived.

To the shortage of food in Cuba, the lack of disposable diapers is added. Many families do not have resources to cover a basic need, personal hygiene, for their children and for the elderly.
