In the United States, the PS5 leads in sales compared to the Xbox Series X/S. Sony’s next-gen console has surpassed Microsoft’s by a million units. It’s not a huge difference, but the PS5 is widening the gap.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have now been out for over two years. As of November 2022, Sony has already sold over 25 million PS5s. Yet both consoles still suffer supply problems, in particular the console from Sony. A new report from VGChartz takes stock of next-gen console sales 25 months after launch. In the USA, the PS5 is at the top of sales compared to the Xbox Series X/S.
According to the report, the PS5 has sold 10.32 million units cwith our neighbors across the Atlantic in 25 months. On his side, Xbox Series X/S sold 9.32 million copies. The PS5 therefore exceeds the Xbox Series by one million units. It’s not a huge gap, but the numbers still testify to the success of the PlayStation.

The Xbox Series X/S has outsold the PS5 in the past 12 months
The PlayStation 5 hasn’t always been far ahead of the Xbox Series X/S. During the first 18 months, the PS5 recorded better sales. However, the gap narrowed between February and May 2022 when the Xbox sold very well. In May, there was only a 600,000 unit difference between the PS5 and the Xbox Series. The PS5 then widened the gap again, rising to 1 million additional consoles sold.
You can see in the tweet above the sales graph of the PS5 and those of the Xbox Series X/S during the first 25 months of their availability. The VGChartz report also confirms that Xbox Series X/S generally outsold PS5 in the United States in the last 12 months.
Despite these excellent figures, it should be noted that the PS5 is not selling as well as its big sister the PS4 and vice versa for Xbox Series versus Xbox One. 25 months after their arrival on the market, the previous generation consoles had sold better than the current consoles (10.94 million for the PS4 and 9.89 million for the Xbox One). Besides, the PlayStation boss is not worried about Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service. The PlayStation Plus has almost fifty million subscribers against just over twenty for the Xbox Game Pass.
