Queen consort Camilla, who will be crowned alongside King Charles on May 6, during a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey. She will wear the crown of Queen Consort Mary.

Queen Consort Camilla will wear the heavy crown of Queen Mary at the coronation of King Charles on May 6 at Westminster Abbey, Buckingham said on Tuesday. This crown, the palace says, has just been removed from its display case at the Tower of London, where it is on display, to be fitted to Camilla’s head.

It is the first time in recent history that an existing crown is used for the coronation of a consort, specifies the official royalty website. The last case dates back to the 18th century.

Created for the coronation of George V

This crown was created for Queen Mary, Queen Consort and wife of King George V, on the occasion of her coronation on June 22, 1911.

Made by the jeweler Garrard, the crown is embellished with 2,200 diamonds. The huge diamonds that originally adorned it – the 105.6 carat Koh-i-Noor, the 94.4 carat Cullinan III and the 63.6 carat Cullinan IV – have been replaced by crystal models. The crown can also be worn without the arches that surmount it.

This is how Queen Mary wore it for the coronation of her son, King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II in May 1937. Since Queen Mary’s death in 1953, the crown has been on display in the Tower of London, along with the other crown jewels.

Queen Consort Camilla will be crowned alongside her husband, King Charles III, on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey, the Palace of Westminster announced last October.
