Brittany is attracting more and more French people. Some even decide to buy a second home there. But this trend is causing a rise in real estate prices, and some residents are worried about seeing their town empty out of tourist seasons.

From May, Brittany attracts more and more French people, and many want to buy a pied-à-terre there at all costs. A success that has become a nightmare: for five years, real estate prices in the region have increased by 30%. For the employees of a restaurant in Carnac (Morbihan), it is even impossible to find accommodation all year round. “The accommodation that we find, either it’s super expensive, or it’s out of the way of Carnac (…). Or else, it’s weekly or monthly rentals”testifies Morgane, waitress.

Deserted towns?

These difficulties in finding accommodation have even become the main difficulty in recruiting staff, as the manager explains. “The supply is low, the demand is very high, and these second homes are more linked to tourist rentals. Carnac is also of interest to certain real estate investors, because in two months, July and August, you can repay a loan year round”, he analyzes. Many are also worried about seeing their cities deserted, outside the tourist seasons.
