The Switch may be extremely popular and its games sell extremely well, but there have actually been unusually few new Mario titles released for the device. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is “just” a remastered version of the Wii U original, and Super Mario Odyssey is the only all-new Mario adventure for the format.

But this does not mean that Nintendo has forgotten its plumber, on the contrary. If proven Nintendo insider Zippo is correct, there are actually several Mario games in development right now, and some are practically finished. In his blog he asks himself “Where’s The Next Mario Game?” and lists everything he knows.

It turns out that we can look forward to two sports titles featuring Mario, one based on baseball and the other on the Olympic Games. Paper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door is also being remastered and is apparently almost done already. Finally, there’s a new two-dimensional Mario adventure in development.

While none of this is confirmed in any way, and Nintendo is among the very few companies these days that can actually keep secrets, Zippo has still gotten a lot of things right in the past – so we’re cautiously optimistic.
