Chihuahua.- In order to strengthen medical care in rural areas, the Mexican Social Security Institute has rural midwives, who speak their mother tongue, monitor pregnancy and accompany Tarahumara women during childbirth.

The representative indigenous peoples of the state live in these regions, such as the Tarahumaras, Pimas, Guarojíos and Tepehuanes, which is why the collaboration of recognized and appreciated people from the populations is necessary in actions to prevent and care for diseases.

The main action of the “rural midwives” is to detect pregnant women in the mountain communities, refer them to the Health Units, monitor their pregnancy and accompany them, if necessary, during childbirth.

All of them are provided with basic knowledge of care, so that they can help in cases that are required; Above all, guide and channel to the first level Units those who need the medical service.

Currently, the volunteer midwives are in the municipalities of Guachochi, Guadalupe and Calvo; Chínipas, Bocoyna, Ocampo, Guazapares, Urique, Bocoyna, Madera, Temósachic, among others.

The IMSS-Wellness Program reaches a total of 291 thousand Chihuahuans, in 45 of the 67 municipalities of the entity; and provides its services through three Hospitals, 144 Health Units, three Mobile Medical Units, nine Health Brigades and two Rural Obstetric Care Centers.
