Sacred sites of indigenous peoples will remain protected: AMLO

MEXICO CITY (apro).- For the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador signed a decree to instruct all agencies and officials of his government “to comply effectively and stop all aggressions , invasions of their lands and sacred places”.

At the conference in the National Palace, he read and signed the decree.

“I committed to the traditional authorities in the visit that I made to the community of Santa Catarina, Jalisco, on September 10, 2022 and I am now going to sign the decree that recognizes the protection, preservation and safeguarding of sacred places and sites as well. such as the pilgrimage routes of the Huichol, Cora, Tepehuano, and Mexicanero peoples; from Jalisco, from Nayarit, Durango and San Luis Potosí”.

He indicated that it is a decree that he defined as the root of his justice plan, whose purpose is to recognize and protect in a special way the sacred places located on the Isla del Rey in San Blas, Nayarit, the Isla del Alacrán in Chapala, Jalisco; Cerro Gordo, San Bernardino de Milpilla, Durango; Wirikuta in Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosí and Santa Catarina in Jalisco.

“For a matter of principle, my government has made the decision to recognize and protect the cultures and values ​​of our peoples that are the heart of deep Mexico and the most intimate truth of our homeland,” he said.

He assured that with the signing of this decree “we give attention to a historical demand of these peoples and reaffirm our conviction that the transformation of Mexico is not only material in nature but also has a profoundly spiritual dimension.”

It is the legacy and contribution of his administration to the indigenous peoples, he said, and he will make it known so that everyone knows what it consists of and that there is a record of fulfilling the commitment he made with Coras, Huicholes, Tepehuanos de la sierra in Nayarit, from Jalisco, Durango, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas.
