The news broke in July 2023, but we still find it hard to believe: season 4 of Sex Education – now available in full on Netflix – is the last in the series. For this fourth season, Otis (Asa Butterfield) must face the departure of Maeve (Emma Mackey), who has gone to study in the United States. But that’s not all: after the closure of Moordale, he has to get his bearings in a new high school where he is not the only therapist. If quite a few actors left the series between seasons 3 and 4, each of the characters present has a great opportunity to evolve in these eight episodes which offer everyone a satisfactory conclusion. Sex Education : the express summary of season 4

For greater clarity (and since a lot is happening in this final season), let’s start with a summary of the main plots of each character:

• Otis : our head therapist is struggling with his long-distance relationship with Maeve: how to stay close to her while being separated by thousands of kilometers? As if that wasn’t enough, he discovers with horror the existence of O (Thaddea Graham), the sexuality therapist at Cavendish High School. Convinced of being the first to have created his “firm”, he does everything to compete with her. At the same time, Otis also has some problems with Jean and tensions also arise with Eric. In short, this is clearly not his time!
• Maeve : in the United States, everything initially goes rather well for Maeve who meets her teacher, Mr Molloy (Dan Levy). But the latter does not seem very impressed by her talents as an author and tells her that she will never achieve anything. Fate hits her hard: Maeve is forced to return to England because her mother overdosed. When she arrives, she discovers that she has died. Her return allows her to rekindle the flame with Otis… but making love with him initially proves impossible. We reassure you for all shipperrs: Maeve and Otis end up sleeping together, but the young woman ultimately decides to return to the United States to pursue her dream.
• Eric : season 4 of Sex Education is that of questions for the character of Ncuti Gatwa. As he prepares to be baptized, Eric doubts more and more: can he really be a Christian and be part of his community without assuming who he really is among them? He finds comfort in Abbi (Anthony Lexa), one of the newcomers who has been shunned by her community because she is trans.
• Aimee : for her part, Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) is still trying to overcome the attack she suffered. She finds a way to express what she feels through art, especially photography. • Jeans : left by Jakob, Jean (Gillian Anderson) has a very difficult time with her daughter Joy’s first moments. Overwhelmed, she comes to abandon Otis and decides to escape her daily life by returning to work: she hosts a radio show on sex. The arrival of her younger sister Joanna (Lisa McGrillis) revives pain from the past, but also provokes the revelation of the identity of little Joy’s father.
• Ruby : Ruby (Mimi Keene) initially struggles to find her place at Cavendish High School where positivity is omnipresent. While she still harbors feelings for Otis, she is also confronted with her past: she knows O well, who is at the origin of the harassment she suffered when she was younger.
• Jackson : this season 4 is one of surprises for Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling). He first discovered a protuberance in one of his testicles which could be of cancerous origin. But above all, Jackson will be confronted with his origins and make a discovery that he did not expect.
• Cal and Viv : Cal (Dua Saleh) is going through a particularly trying season 4 as he faces many difficulties in his transition. For her part, Viv (Chinenye Ezeudu) gets closer to Beau, but discovers that the latter wants to control her every move.

What happens in the latest episode of Sex Education ?

In this finale of Sex Educationwhile a big auction for charity is being prepared at the high school, students mobilize when Cal goes missing. Everyone tries to find their trace even though they have been seen. for the last time in a shopping center. At the same time, it is the big day for Eric, who has decided to be baptized but, at the last moment, he changes his mind and reveals his homosexuality to the assembly. Only his mother seems to accept him and Eric leaves the scene, devastated. While having a vision from God, Eric luckily finds Cal on a cliff. They imply that they wanted to end their lives, but changed their mind. Jackson, also close to Cal, finds them and, together, they persuade Cal to follow them: Eric and Jackson assure that they will always be there to support Cal despite the trials.

For her part, Aimee finally seems to have reached the end of her healing process and burns the jeans she was wearing on the day of her attack. After receiving Maeve’s blessing, she finds Isaac and kisses him. Adam reconciles with his father and explains to his pretty colleague that he is bisexual and that he no longer wants to hide. She offers him a date. Parallel to the intrigue with Cal, Jackson discovers that his mother had an affair with a married man, who is his biological father. The latter refuses to see him and for good reason: Jackson’s mother tells him that he is aware of his existence, but never wanted to get to know him. In the USA, Maeve discovers that one of her friends sent the first chapters of her book to a publishing house, who contacted her to potentially publish her book. Eric reconciles with Otis and explains to him thathe found his vocation: to become a pastor. For his part, Otis decides to give O the job of high school therapist. Jean makes peace with her sister and prepares to reveal to Dan that he is Joy’s father.

Sex Education : Do Maeve and Otis end up as a couple?

Much to the dismay of Otis and Maeve fans, the two characters do not end up as a couple in the last episode of Sex Education. At the end of episode 7, Otis and Maeve sleep together, but decide not to be a couple because of the distance that separates them, the young woman not being sure of returning to England. The series ends on a scene where Otis reads a letter left by Maeve, where she thanks him for allowing her to open her heart to others, something she will never forget.
