More than 3,500 skiers took part in a torchlight descent in the ski resort of Les Arcs, in Savoie. With this record, they are continuing a tradition that dates back decades.

The tourists from Les Arcs ski resort (Savoie) were able to admire a beautiful spectacle: 3,593 torches to light up the slopes, a world record. The event, usually reserved for instructors, was open to all skiers armed with glow sticks. But the tradition goes back a long way. The oldest images date back to 1955 in Val-d’Isère (Savoie). The participants launched themselves on the track after the blessing of their skis by a priest.

A torchlight descent for all occasions

Sometimes personalities mingled with skiers, such as the former President of the Republic, Valéry Giscard-d’Estaing, in 1975 in Courchevel (Savoie). Sometimes, the torchlight descent is done in memory of a deceased, or to support a cause, as for the fight against HIV/AIDS in 1996. Unmissable, this tradition is in any case a good occasion to celebrate.
