SO/LO: Entrevista with Erich Martino (DJ Koggi)

Climate change is already here

Two years ago, Erich Martino (DJ Koggi) woke up and saw the sky completely orange. World’s End? No, but almost: it was all about the outbreak of the historic wildfires in California, whose shocking images went around the world.

The life of DJ Koggi: Mexican broadcaster, designer and producer, who lives in San Francisco, changed from that moment on. We remember that at that time humanity was locked in their homes due to the pandemic and that the visions of the future were bleak.

In search of making sense of his experience, DJ Koggi catalyzed his feelings of hopelessness and uncertainty into the creation of the album At The End of the World, Plant a Treewhich he performed together with his extremely talented collective ALONE (which has the most beautiful and creative Instagram account we have seen).

The artistic identity of the project

The sound of the album is inspired by Talk Talk, Pink Floyd y David Sylvianbut it is also easy to perceive details coming from David Bowie, Aphex Twin, Air y Brian Eno.

We could qualify the production of DJ Koggi as a minimalist ambient, with a spatial amalgamation of synthesizers, voices, percussion and guitars that encourage reflection on the times in which we live.

The project of DJ Koggi next to the collective ALONE It has a fantastic visual identity made by Hugh Millerthe photograph of Andrew Hobbs and with the involvement of the writer Adam Greenfield. The union of the different arts results in an extremely well-cared product that we could already consider on our list of the best we have experienced in 2023.
