The recent publication of the social position indices (IPS) of National Education underlines how much the sociology of Catholic establishments is privileged: 112 for schools, 114 for colleges, 122 for general and technological high schools, i.e. 10 to 14 points of more than the public scores. If we exclude rural and peri-urban areas and focus on urban areas, these gaps widen considerably, most often oscillating between 20 and 40 points. It’s a surprise ? A matter of concern?

Philippe Delorme I fully share the desire of the Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye, to increase social diversity in establishments, because I believe, like him, that it is beneficial to all students, disadvantaged AND advantaged. However, we must agree on what is called “social mix”. With regard to compulsory education, the average IPS in the private sector is slightly above 110, which testifies to a real mix of populations reflecting the plurality of French society.

The problem in this country is not that there are private institutions with a GPI of 110 but that there are very segregated public establishments with a GPI of 80, or even much less. It is in these establishments, and not in ours, that there is a lack of diversity. We are not responsible for the bankruptcies of the city’s policy, nor for the problems of organization of the National Education which could lead to the constitution of these ghettos.
