A study published in stroke magazine on January 23 suggests that endometriosis, a disorder responsible for the growth of the endometrium outside the uterus, may be associated with a higher risk of stroke in women.

To carry out the research, scientists from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences and the Institute of Basic Sciences, both in China, analyzed genetic endometriosis in a group of 521,612 people who had stroke. Among the participants, 77,257 women had some genetic variation caused by endometriosis.

The researchers found that the condition was significantly associated with an increased risk of total ischemic stroke (caused by blockage of blood vessels) and cardiometabolic stroke (triggered from clots forming in the heart).

The risks of ischemic stroke were significantly increased for subtypes of endometriosis of the ovary, pelvic peritoneum (the layer that covers the abdominal and pelvic organs), rectovaginal septum (when the disease reaches between the posterior wall of the vagina and the final portion of the rectum) and vagina.

Causality was most significant for infertility-related endometriosis and cardiometabolic ischemic stroke. Neurosurgeon specialist in stroke Victor Hugo Espíndola explains that the study is observational and that it is still not known for sure what causes the relationship between the diseases. Therefore, research still needs to be done.

“The hypothesis is that endometriosis must promote an inflammatory state that increases the formation of thrombi and, consequently, the risk of a stroke”, says Espíndola.

The neurosurgeon teaches that endometriosis should not be considered simply a gynecological disease, but a systemic pathology, that is, that affects the whole body.
