“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” dominated the box office in the United States and Canada for the fourth consecutive weekend, taking in $40 million for a global total of more than $1 billion, according to estimates released Sunday.

The adaptation of the Nintendo video game dominated all of April and broke records. This weekend had little competition, although that will change next week when “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” premieres.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is estimated to easily surpass $1 billion at the box office globally on Sunday, marking the 10th film to reach that level and the first since 2019. It brings a domestic total of $490 million, and the international total is even higher. This weekend it grossed 68.3 million abroad, bringing its international total to 532.5 million.

In second place was the horror film “Evil Dead Rise,” which in its second week fell 50% to $12.2 million.

Among this weekend’s releases, the top performer was “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret”, an adaptation of the book by Judy Blume. It grossed $6.8 million when shown in 3,343 theaters. The film, written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, had a budget of $30 million.

Finnish action film “Sisu” opened in 1,006 theaters, grossing $3.3 million. It was a good result for an international film, and it’s not often that such films receive national exposure.

The biopic of boxer George Foreman, “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World,” grossed $3 million by opening in 3,054 theaters.

“Polite Society,” about a young British-Pakistani girl, grossed $800,000 by opening in 927 theaters.

Meanwhile, the re-release of “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” grossed $4.7 million by opening in just 475 theaters. Disney re-released the film to commemorate its 40th anniversary.
