Renting an electric scooter is very convenient, but no matter how you twist and turn it – if you go often (even short distances) the cost ticks away quickly, regardless of which supplier you have as your favorite.
If you also live outside the city centre, the range of rental scooters is almost non-existent. And then we are talking about big cities – in smaller communities there is hardly any economically justifiable basis for providing rental services of electric scooters.
The alternative is of course to buy your own bike. There are a variety of models to choose from. In this test, we have collected six exciting options. The selection consists of electric scooters intended for adult riders, i.e. similar to those that can be rented in town. The test will be continuously updated as new models come in for testing.

Choose the right tire for your electric kick bike
Worth thinking about before a possible purchase is how and where you intend to go with your new friend. As always, regardless of the vehicle, the tires are an important component that greatly affects driving characteristics and comfort. Air-filled tires provide better comfort, but can puncture if you’re unlucky, and require topping up air from time to time.
Some models have suspension, mainly at the front, while others are mute. If you will only drive on smooth and even asphalt, this is less important, but on worse road conditions you will regret not choosing a model with suspension, air-filled tires or with both. Plastic wheels hardly exist anymore, which is understandable. Here we are talking about driving characteristics hardly worth the name, but they are still delivered on the occasional cheap children’s model. Rubber tires are more or less standard and provide significantly better comfort and driving characteristics.
To be classified as a bicycle, the maximum power is 250 watts, but what really applies in practice is a bit fuzzy. The Ninebot ES2, on which several of the rental models are based, for example has an output power of 300 watts and several models have significantly more powerful motors, including two of the test participants. In order to be able to drive “legally”, if we disregard the maximum power of 250 watts, the maximum speed is throttled to 20 km/h. According to the suppliers we spoke to, it is more or less generally accepted. We will see if there will be any new review and possible changes in legislation and practice.
Within a so-called fenced area, on the other hand, it is free and then the maximum power has no meaning. You can think what you want about these different rules. Inside the city center there is no reason for the scooters to barely have cruising speed, but if you ride on a small country road, 20 km/h feels hopelessly slow.
If we disregard increased electricity consumption, our experience is that a stronger engine results in an improved and more entertaining driving experience, regardless of whether it is throttled to a maximum of 20 km/h or not. It’s about acceleration and torque, as well as whether the team can handle the hill or not.
