From its speedy credits to Eddie Murphy’s extroverted acting, seen recently in the Netflix comedy You People, The Beverly Hills Copbroadcast this Tuesday, February 20, 2023 at 11:05 p.m. on M6, remains a standard meter of American police comedy of the 1980s. 48 hoursalways with Murphy but also Nick Nolte, or – less muscular – than The lethal Weapon, starring Mel Gibson. Alongside the irresistible Murphy in the role of Alex Foley, we find the actor Judge Reinhold in the role of his sidekick, Inspector Billy Rosewood. But what becomes of this actor?

The white clown

Faced with the unleashed “Auguste” Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold somewhat fulfills the office of the white clown, serious and in reaction, in this rhythmic police comedy that is The Beverly Hills Cop. His character of the policeman Billy Rosewood does not imagine for a second having to collaborate with Axel Foley, before being pushed there by circumstances, then to sympathize with him. Born in 1957, Reinhold debuts in an episode of the 1970s series wonder woman before exploding, in 1982, in the cult comedy for teenagers Fast Times at Ridgemont High, where also begin – sorry! – Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nicolas Cage. Judge also plays in Gremlins, another iconic film of the decade. But it is with The Beverly Hills Cop that his face becomes genuinely familiar to the general public. It was without counting on a resumption of the franchise having brought him fame! Announced in 2022, The fourth episode of the Beverly Hills Cop should be hitting the screens this year. Judge will find his accomplice Eddie Murphy there. But it is not the cinema that matters most, at the moment, to the 65-year-old comedian. A play he performs at the Arkansas Repertory Theater and about which Reinhold says: “All we want is to make people laugh… We laugh about it, by the way, ourselves“. This creation by Simon recalls the golden age of the first comedy shows on American television in the 1950s, the ancestor shows of the Saturday Night Live and in which brilliant authors such as Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar and Mel Brooks cut their teeth. By paying homage to them on stage, Judge Reinhold proves that there is a life after, and alongside, cinema.
