Since January 16, 2023, the first episode of the highly anticipated series “The Last of Us, based on the hit video game of the same name WOW and Sky Q appeared. And the start has it all!

After an interesting intro, in which a scientist (John Hannah) talks about the dangers of mushrooms for mankind on a talk show in 1968, “The Last of Us” starts off quite idyllically. Joel (Pedro Pascal) lives a normal life in Austin, Texas with his daughter Sarah (Nico Parker) in 2003 in a nice neighborhood and works with his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) on a construction site. Today is the single father’s birthday. But that quickly turns into a nightmare when a fungal virus turns more and more people into bloodthirsty zombies. Austin and the whole world falls into chaos.

Joel wants to flee the city with Sarah and Tommy. Outside, however, they are stopped by a soldier who receives the order to shoot them. He meets Sarah, who then dies in Joel’s arms – before Tommy kills the soldier.

20 years later, not much is left of humanity. In the devastated United States, the few survivors of the pandemic live in quarantine zone, beyond the high walls, the infected stalk the land. The secured zones are managed by the Federal Disaster Response Administration (FEDRA), a military organization that acts with the utmost ruthlessness against their opponents and rule-breakers, including murder. Among their greatest enemies are the Firefliesa militant group of freedom fighters.

Joel has now become a cynic and is living in a quarantine zone in Boston smugglers and black market traders over water. Together with his girlfriend Tess (Anna Torv) he wants to get a car to save his brother. While looking for a car battery, they run into Fireflies member Marlene (Marlene Dandridge). With her is the smart and tough teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey).

Without much explanation, Marlene hires Joel and Tess to help Ellie to a Fireflies camp outside the quarantine zone to accomplish. In return, she promises them a working truck. Joel, Tess and Ellie leave. But just as the three have left the quarantine zone through a secret passage, they are discovered by a FEDRA soldier. He routinely checks whether they are infected. Joel is finally able to overpower him. But then he and Tess do an unexpected discovery

The soldier’s device indicates that Ellie is infected with the fungus. The teenager confirms this and shows the bite mark on her right forearm. However, Ellie also tells that she was bitten by an infected three weeks ago. And normally you change after a few hours, at the latest after a day.

And that’s why Ellie is so important to the Fireflies, to all of humanity. She’s immune to the fungus! That’s why the doctors at the Fireflies want to examine Ellie to get a antidote to develop. But first the teenager has to fight her way through the devastated Boston, which is teeming with infected people, together with Joel and Tess…

Beginning January 16, a new episode of The Last of Us will be released every Monday on Monday WOW and Sky Q. In total, the first season of the series will span nine episodes. From March 6, 2023, there will be a new episode every Monday at 8:15 p.m. on Sky Atlantic.
