HBO’s TV series based on The Last of Us is just around the corner. In that regard, the series’ creators have shared some new information, including how the series’ virus has undergone a change from the game.

Specifically, it is the way the virus spreads that is adjusted. In the games, this is done via tracks that only appear in certain places in the world. According to Naughty Dog CEO Neil Druckmann, this would not work quite the same way in reality.
In the series, the virus instead spreads via noose wires, which also means that Joel, Ellie and company don’t have to manage with gas masks.
– When you encounter spores in the game, you must put on a gas mask. If we had released spores into the air in the world we create in the TV series, it’s pretty clear that they would spread everywhere. Everyone would have had to wear masks all the time and presumably everyone would have been infected, Druckmann said in an interview with the website Comic Book.
The production team tried to find an interesting solution that also fit in with the spirit of the game series. The answer was the aforementioned sling threads, which are admittedly not a completely new idea.

Following the announcement, Reddit user dug “Imissbreaking bath» (via Eurogamer) revealed a piece of early concept art for The Last of Us. The image, which you can see on the right, specifically mentions creepers that “crawl along the ground looking for hosts to infect”.
The series will otherwise deal with more of Joel’s life before the apocalypse occurred. To IGN said actor Gabriel Luna – who plays Joel’s brother Tommy – that fans can expect some good, old-fashioned family idyll before things go wrong.
The Last of Us series premieres on January 16, on the streaming service HBO Max. Developer Naughty Dog is also working on a multiplayer game set in the same universe, and we should see more of this during the year.
