It won’t be too long until you can watch the Super Mario Bros movie. Of course, in the context of this, ever thicker marketing guns are being used. And I’ll admit I’m a little trailer-weary, which is why I found the way Illumination pulled this off very refreshing this time.

The animated film’s Super Bowl commercial doesn’t show any scenes from the film – at least none that relate to the plot of the film, to be precise. In times when you often have the feeling that you can already guess the complete course of action from a trailer, this is a clever approach.

The new Super Bowl commercial for the Mario movie is full of Easter Eggs

Instead, it’s a commercial featuring a commercial, a local television TV commercial for the Mario Brothers’ plumbing business, in a late ’80s style with hip-hop and thick CRT scanlines.

In the video, the two rush their van to help a woman whose sink is overflowing. The rest is basically just easter eggs.

Because of course the website SMBPlumbing.com and the telephone hotline, which appear in the short film, went online at the same time. When you call the number, Luigi’s (Charlie Day from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) voice comes to your ears.

To do this, dial 929-55-MARIO, which will say, “Thanks for calling Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, it’s-a-me, Luigi!” This is followed by a joke that no job is too big for the two of them, even a villa (English: “Mansion”) would dare.

If you look and listen closely, you will discover a lot more. On the one hand there is of course the Super Mario Bros. Rap from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. For example on the city map. Some fans have identified the voice actress as the “rescued” housewife Jeannie Elias (not related or related by marriage), who played Princess Toadstool (now “Peach”) on the show.

On the city map, which you can see the two brothers’ van zipping over, there are still details such as Hanafuda Ave (Nintendo’s story began with Hanafuda playing cards), Punch Out, Link Street and 1899th Street, because Nintendo was founded in 1889. There’s definitely more to it, so get those magnifying glasses out.

The Super Mario Bros. movie hits theaters April 7th. After the audience’s reaction to Chris Pratt’s casting was initially very cynical, the mood towards the film clearly turns positive after a few well-done trailers. The film could actually become something.
