A somewhat unusual coup took place on New Year’s Eve in Tokyo when a gang of well-oiled and organized thieves broke into the Fukufuku Trading Card Store in Ikebukuro using blowtorches. After first climbing up to the building’s second floor and entering the store, they then used hammers to smash a number of glass cases filled with precious Pokemon cards. For about a minute they stood shoveling these into bags before finally taking refuge after less than a minute.

Shop owner Yuma Hashida was upset in the interview with Japanese UN.

“I can’t forgive the culprits”

“We mainly deal with cards with high rarity, but there was a wide range of cards, from old Pokémon cards from 20 years ago to new cards, but all of them were taken”

In total, it was about 100 cards with a total value of about SEK 110,000, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police is currently looking for the suspects who were caught on several of the store’s surveillance cameras. Pokemon card prices have skyrocketed in recent years due to the game’s steadily increasing popularity, and collectors have proven willing to spend upwards of hundreds of thousands of kroner on the most exclusive and rare cards.
