Last month, large capacity storage specialist Apex Storage unveiled an expansion card capable of accommodating 21 PCIe SSDs. Yesterday it was Sabrent, a well-known storage brand, which confirmed on social media that it will sell this card as the Sabrent Apex X21 Destroyer, at a price that should be around $3,000. without SSD.

At the heart of this monstrosity is the HighPoint SSD7540 PCIe Gen4 x16 RAID card, modified to accommodate 21 flash drives. Why 21? Because that’s the maximum number of SSDs the company could physically fit on the card. Not one more.

A PCIe card for professionals

This card is therefore more dedicated to experienced professionals. Sabrent thus explains to Tech Radar that “the X21 is not equipped with a RAID controller chip, which allows end users to configure the X21 according to system requirements.” Besides“the card is not equipped with fans, so users need a cooling system to run it“. So think more about workstations, video editing computers than an SSD intended to be installed on your PS5.

The American company tested the card with its own Rocket 4 Plus 8TB SSDs. Sabrent has also confirmed that the X21 will be compatible with 16TB SSDs. Thus, fully loaded, this card will be able to reach 336 TB of SSD storage! Currently unavailable, these 16TB SSDs will cost around $2,000 at launch according to Sabrent, which will therefore represent the majority of the cost of the set. In total, the cost will be around $45,000.

Sabrent recalls that “when the first 8TB came out, they were around $2,000, and today they’re pretty cheap compared to those days. We have to spend a lot of money to develop them; then once they’ve entered the supply chain and sold out a bit, we usually lower the price.
