NEW YORK — A child was among the three victims killed when a passenger train crashed into a truck in New York state, authorities reported. The Amtrak train was heading north when it collided with a Dodge truck Friday night.

It happened in North Tonawanda, a small town in upstate New York near the Niagara River between Niagara Falls and Buffalo, police said.

The dead were a 6-year-old boy, a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, North Tonawanda Police Capt. Daryl Truty said in a statement Saturday. The names of the victims have not been released.

None of the train’s 21 passengers or crew were injured in the crash, Amtrak spokeswoman Olivia Irvin said in a statement. The train was traveling from New York City to Niagara Falls when the accident occurred.

The truck was so mangled that first responders had to use heavy equipment to reach the victims, the North Tonawanda firefighters union said in a statement.

Other details, such as the location of the vehicle at the time of the crash, were not released.

Local press and television reported that the truck had become stuck between railway gates at a crossing. WIVB and the Buffalo News reported that there were disabled vehicles and police vehicles at the intersection before the collision.

Neither the police nor the North Tonawanda mayor’s office responded to messages asking for more information.
