Train between Brooklyn and Queens will receive federal funds

One of the most important public transportation projects for our city will receive vital assistance from the federal government.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer’s office confirmed to NY1 News that $15 million will be awarded to the MTA to launch the Interborough Express, the proposal to create an urban rail line connecting passengers between Brooklyn and Queens.

The service would run from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Jackson Heights, Queens, and connect with 17 subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road. It would run on an existing 14-mile rail line currently used for freight trains.

According to its creators, the total tour would last approximately 40 minutes and is expected to serve 115,000 users per day.

The plan has an estimated cost of more than five billion dollars.

The announcement comes as the MTA is prioritizing urgent capital projects due to the indefinite suspension of the new congestion toll for lower Manhattan.
