Two cases of measles in a shelter for immigrants

The Health Department said two adults at an immigrant shelter in Brooklyn were diagnosed with measles this week.

The city says it is coordinating with local hospitals to identify other possible cases and assist others who may have been exposed.

Measles is highly contagious, but can be prevented through vaccination.

In a statement, city Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said that “while measles can be an extremely contagious virus, the risk to the community is low since most New Yorkers are vaccinated against it. Importantly, measles is preventable.”
