Mexico reports a new massacre and criticism rains down on López Obrador

MEXICO CITY.- Of the candidates for mayor were killed in attacks in the states of Guerrero and Chiapas, in southern Mexico, with two weeks left until the elections Mexican presidential, legislative and local elections scheduled for June 2.

The candidate for mayor of Coyuca de Benítez, Aníbal Zúñiga Cortes and his wife, Rubí Bravo Solís, were murdered on Thursday in Acapulco, according to the Mexican newspaper ‘El Universal’. Zúñiga was a candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Guerrero reported the opening of an investigation into these murders. “Agents from the Ministerial Investigative Police and experts from the FGE went to the scene and carried out the corresponding procedures. These actions are aimed at collecting evidence that contributes to the clarification of the crime and the subsequent presentation of the guilty parties to justice” , he indicated through social networks.

The leader of the PRI, Alejandro ‘Alito’ Moreno, condemned the events and has demanded that the authorities find those responsible.

On the other hand, the candidate for mayor of La Concordia, in Chiapas, by the Chiapas Popular Party, Lucero López Meza, was murdered in an “armed confrontation between civilians.” In the attack, a total of three women died, including a minor, three men and two were also wounded by firearms.

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, condemned the attack against the candidate in La Concordia. “Two criminal groups are fighting in that region,” he highlighted, although he has denied that there are serious security problems in Chiapas.
