Two teenagers who were at the beach disappeared while swimming in the waters of Jacob Riis Park in Queens.
The tragedy was reported yesterday on the beach, at 157th Street on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, around 6:35 p.m., when the lifeguards had already finished their shift.
According to several witnesses, the 16 and 17 year old teenagers tried to jump an extremely large wave but it submerged them. Apparently, a strong current sank them.
Firefighters and police divers searched for them until they were ordered out of the water because the sea current was too strong.
The search efforts were also joined by the New York Police Special Operations Aviation Unit and members of the Coast Guard.
The search for the teenagers continues.
