Citizens and environmental activists denounced the death by run over of a female jaguar about to give birth and that was allegedly displaced by the works of the Mayan Train, a work of the Federal Government that they accuse of devastating the environment and whose design is inspired by that animal.

The death of the jaguar, an almost four-year-old female, occurred Thursday morning on the Cancun-Playa del Carmen highway, in Quintana Roo, in front of a hotel.

A member of the National Jaguar Conservation Alliance confirmed that she was about to give birth to another female who also died.

The images published on the internet have generated outrage among those who have opposed the destruction of the jungle caused by the Mayan Train.

“Displacing endangered species. Hectares of virgin forest felled, machinery noise and destruction of caves that they use for shelter and drinking water. Everything that we have warned and evidenced, happening,” said activist Cris Nolasco, who in September denounced before Beatriz Gutiérrez, wife of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the damage caused by the Train.

“You are filled with courage, you remember that a very short time ago another jaguar was run over nearby, you find out she is pregnant, she wants to know who the hell is responsible,” accused environmentalist José Urbina, founder of the Cenotes Urbanos project, which processed the first amparo against the Mayan Train in Quintana Roo.

“You see how they are cutting down the jungle, they began to cut down 10 million trees without even having the Environmental Impact Statement, which does not even have the change of land use, that they are drilling the jungle, that they are impacting the aquifer control, that They are destroying the Cenotes that they said they were not going to touch”.

López Obrador has assured that “come rain, shine or lighten,” the 1,554-kilometer Mayan Train will be inaugurated at the end of this year.

The work was budgeted at 140 billion pesos, although in July he stated that its cost was already at more than 300 billion pesos.

For the works of the Train, strips of several kilometers of jungle have had to be cut down, despite the fact that the President had assured that “not even a tree” would be cut down.
