US plans another $2.3 billion in aid for Ukraine's defense

WASHINGTONThe United States will soon announce an additional $2.3 billion in aid for the security of Ukraine, which will include anti-tank weapons, interceptors and ammunition for Patriot missile systems and other air defense systems, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday.

The announcement came as Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov met with Austin at the Pentagon, and is a strong response to kyiv’s requests for help in combating Russian forces in the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that Russia had launched more than 800 powerful glider bombs in Ukraine in the past week alone, and urged national leaders to relax restrictions on the use of Western weapons to attack military targets inside Russia.

In particular, he noted that Ukraine needs the “necessary means to destroy the carriers of these bombs, including Russian fighter aircraft, wherever they may be.”
