US President Joe Biden could officially announce as early as Tuesday that he would run for the 2024 presidential election. This is reported by people familiar with the matter on Thursday (local time). However, the exact time can still change.

An announcement by Biden on Tuesday would come exactly four years after the start of his 2020 election campaign. Biden is 80 years old, already the oldest sitting president in US history. Should he run for the second time, he would be 86 at the end of his four-year term.

If he decides to fight for re-election, Biden could face former US President Donald Trump again. However, Biden has struggled with low approval ratings. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Sunday, only 39 percent of all Americans are satisfied with their work in the White House.

Biden has few competitors within the Democratic Party. Still, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll in March, only 48 percent of Democrats support Biden’s re-election as US president. 45 percent of Democrats have spoken out against it. (Reuters)
