The big league Tucupita Marcano is being investigated for allegedly betting on his own baseball games.

According to multiple reports, San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is facing a lifetime ban from baseball for violating the MLB’s betting policy, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Jared Diamond and Lindsey Adler of the Wall Street Journal.

Four other players are being investigated for betting on baseball as well, although the identities of those others are not known.

Marcano, 24, was placed on the injured list by the Pirates in July of last year and ultimately underwent surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The Padres claimed him off waivers in November and he remains on the disabled list for all of 2024 so far, still recovering from that surgery.

Marcano allegedly bet on multiple games involving the Pittsburgh Pirates last season while he was on their injured list.

Marcano, the league and the union declined to comment for the article, although the Padres issued a statement:

“We are aware of an active investigation by Major League Baseball regarding a matter that occurred when the player in question was a member of another organization and was not affiliated with the San Diego Padres. “We will not be commenting further until the investigation process has been completed.”
