To obtain a standard Massachusetts driver’s license, you will need to provide the following documents, according to the Massachusetts Registration of Vehicles (RMV):
- Proof of identity and date of birth
- Proof of social security status
- Proof of residence in Massachusetts

PROOF OF IDENTITY AND DATE OF BIRTH
Starting July 1, the RMV will allow more documents to prove identity and date of birth under the Labor and Family Mobility Law. No document can be expired.
Document 1: Choose ONE of the following as your first document
- Foreign passport
- Consular identification document
Document 2: Choose ONE of the following as your second document
- Driver’s license from any state or territory of the United States
- Original or certified copy of a birth certificate from any state or jurisdiction

- A marriage certificate or divorce decree issued by any state or territory of the United States
SOCIAL SECURITY PROOF OF STATUS
Drivers must also meet a social security documentation requirement.
There are three different ways to meet this requirement:
- Provide a social security number (SSN card not required)
- Submit a denial letter from the Social Security Administration
- If you present a foreign passport or consular ID to meet the document requirements, you may sign an affidavit stating that you have never been issued a social security number (RMV will provide a template)
PROOF OF MASSACHUSETTS RESIDENCY
Drivers must provide a document to prove Massachusetts residency. The document must show the current residential address with the applicant’s name. Here we show you some of the ones you might have.

- Official school transcript for the current year
