Kaomoji is a relaxed and creative way to simulate emotions through texts, characters, symbols and countless alphanumeric combinations. Contrary to traditional emojis and emoticons, which are simple and objective, this type of language is more elaborate and manages to convey a multitude of feelings — from a passionate face sending a little heart to an angry kaomoji overturning a table.

For example, some common kaomojis are ( ̄▽ ̄), which is the representation of a person smiling, and (╹◡╹)♡, which can be someone in love; already the (;一_一), shows that someone is sad or upset, among many others.

What is the origin of the kaomojis?

Kaomoji emerged in the 1990s in Japan, when the internet was still a recent technology for the general public. In literal translation, “kao” means “face”, and “moji” means “writing”. Putting the words together, kaomoji would mean something like “face word”.

Language was a creative way that the Japanese invented to circumvent the lack of videoconferencing applications or graphic emojis. As you couldn’t see the person’s face on the other side of the screen, the kaomoji fulfilled the role of expressing feelings with more richness in detail.

The success of kaomojis was so great that they became part of Japanese culture and, over time, conquered fans all over the world, especially anime and manga enthusiasts — products that inspired the creation of kaomoji.

In addition to messaging platforms, the Japanese language is also present in emails, social networks, forums, chat rooms and online games.

How to use a kaomoji

There are several ways to create or use ready-made kaomojis. Unlike what is seen in common emoticons, which have vertical faces and emphasis on mouth expressions, kaomoji focuses on the feelings conveyed by the look, and the position of the face is horizontal.

To create your own little face, you must choose between parentheses ( ), square brackets ( ) and braces { } to draw the shape of the face. Inside it, you need to insert special symbols to form eyes, mouth, nose, spots and various elements — in this case, select asterisks, dots, special symbols and everything your creativity allows.Keyboards and applications with kaomoji
