Woman run over dies and officer is injured while investigating the incident

FRESNO, California – At about 2:00 am Monday, a still unidentified woman was struck by a driver on Clovis Avenue in the southeast part of the city.

When officers arrived they found a victim on the ground with no vital signs. She was taken to the Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) in Fresno, where she passed away minutes later.

Authorities say the driver allegedly responsible remained at the scene of the collision and cooperated with the investigation.

While officers were on the scene, a speeding vehicle that apparently did not see the cordoned-off area of the fatal hit-and-run struck one of the officers.

“The suspect car collided with the passenger side of an officer patrol car. The impact caused it to spin and an officer was struck by his own vehicle, sending him into the air,” Fresno police reported.

The officer landed on the road, wounded and in pain throughout his body. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries, detectives added.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, Santos Coronel, 28, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The name of the victim of the deadly hit-and-run has not yet been released.
