Avira security experts warn of the XWorm RAT malware. Several media outlets unanimously report that the Avira experts have noticed a significant increase in malware since the beginning of April.

XWorm RAT is distributed via spam emails intended primarily to lure professionals. The criminals pretend that they are interested in booking their services for a new project. The e-mail says: “I am interested in an offer from you, we are looking for professionals for our new project.”

According to reports, XWorm RAT can run ransomware, gain access to webcam and keyboard, steal passwords, gain remote access to PC via remote desktop protocol, launch a Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, or even cash, among other things steal via cryptocurrencies.

The malware is classified as particularly dangerous because it uses “some of the most effective techniques from initial distribution to final payload delivery,” according to Gurumoorthi Ramanathan, threat analysis engineer at Avira Threat Protection Labs. A request to Avira for further information on the extent and dangers of the malware initially went unanswered.
