Building collapse on the Spanish island of Mallorca leaves 4 dead

MADRID — Four people died and several others were seriously injured Thursday in the collapse of a building on the island of Mallorca, emergency officials reported Spain.

Emergency services said 16 people had been seriously injured and seven of them suffered very serious injuries. They were being treated at local hospitals.

The incident occurred in the city of Palma, on the Mediterranean island popular with tourists.

Spanish media said the building housed a restaurant called Medusa Beach Club, located near the beach.

Balearic Islands public television, IB3, reported that there were people dancing on a terrace that collapsed onto another floor below.

The causes of the collapse have not been disclosed.

Emergency services continue to search the scene and treat the injured.
