MIAMI.- After successfully emerging from his tenacious battle against leukemia, Commissioner Manolo Reyes announced that he will run for mayor of the city of Miami.
“When the time comes, if God has given me health, I will consider it and there is a large percentage that I will run,” said the re-elected commissioner last November with an overwhelming 86% of the votes.
“I am not going to say no, because it is true that I want to apply, if I am healthy,” he stressed in the “Contacto Directo” program on Actualidad Radio, this Monday, April 15.
Reyes considers it his duty to make that decision, “it is the city where I grew up, where my children live, my neighbors. It is my duty to fight for the well-being of this city.”
He recalled that when he entered politics for the first time, he did so because he wanted to bring his ideas and politics to the city of Miami and promised to confront the so-called corruption that exists in the city.
In recent times, Miami has been shaken by multiple scandals such as the conviction of Joe Carollo, after being found guilty of abuse of power, former commissioner Alex Díaz de la Portilla was accused of bribery and money laundering and Mayor Francis Suárez himself He was marred by some conflicts of interest between his private businesses and the mayor’s office. Also regarding the figure of the former city attorney Victoria Méndez there was a shadow of doubt about how she managed certain legal problems in the city.
The commissioner of District 4 of Miami, almost 80 years old, stands out from the rest of the elected officials for his direct way of doing politics, getting personally involved in street improvements, construction of affordable housing, and also for managing to avoid scandals so common in the main city of South Florida.
In 2025, the term of Francis Suárez, current mayor of Miami, ends.
